It is the only moving joint you cannot replace cheaply once the bin is molded.

A reliable hinge shows its quality at three points. First, lift the lid to its top arc by hand and let go. It should fall at a steady pace rather than slam. That means the pivot pin is straight and the motor is not forced to brake the fall. Second, press the lid sideways. Less than an eighth of an inch of play signals a tight sleeve or bearing, and the sensor alignment will stay true. Third, watch for exposed fasteners.
